Our two bedroom Cottage has a large kitchen with tiled floors, a long farm table and a spacious living room area furnished with an Oriental rug, as well as paintings and prints by local artists. Each bedroom has a queen size bed, antique dressers, ample closet space and a luggage rack. The front porch is a wonderful place to view sunsets over the Allegheny Great North Mountain whose crest is the state line of Virginia and West Virginia. The Cottage was built during the Second World War by my parents Miller and Inez Barley. The long farm table in the kitchen was our kitchen table when I was a boy. The main house where Helen and I live was built in the 1850’s and added on to by my grandfather, Adam Barley, in 1884. Helen and I added a sunroom on the East side in 1981. Adjacent to the house is a smokehouse where pork, hams, shoulders and sides of bacon have been cured for over a century. We keep a few chickens for our eggs and supplement their rations with the excess produce from our vegetable garden. Our farm was declared a Centennial Farm by the State of Virginia and has been worked by Barley’s for 141 years. We look forward to seeing you! |
